History of Block Panchayat
Kondotty Block Panchayat -
Block came into existence in 1957. At that time, it was part of Kozhikode District. During the initial period of the Block, the administration was carried out by a Block Advisory Committee comprising the Presidents of Village Development Committees and members nominated by the Government. The RDO (Revenue Divisional Officer) served as the Chairman of this committee. With the introduction of the Panchayat system in Kerala, the Village Development Committee Presidents were replaced by Panchayat Presidents in the Block Advisory Committee. In 1968, the Block Advisory Committee was replaced by the Block Development Committee. The Chairman of the Committee was to be elected from among the Panchayat Presidents. Accordingly, Janab P.P. Abdul Gaffoor Moulavi, who was the President of the undivided Cherukavu Panchayat including Vazhayur, was elected as the first Chairman of Kondotty Block. Moulavi played a very significant role in the early development of Kondotty Block. With the formation of Malappuram District in 1969, this Block became part of Malappuram District.
At the time of formation, the Block consisted of 9 Panchayats: Oorngattiri, Kuzhimanna, Cheekode, Chelembra, Cherukavu, Kondotty, Pallikkal, Pulikkal, and Vazhakkad.Later, Oorngattiri Panchayat was bifurcated to form Keezhiparamba Panchayat, and Cherukavu Panchayat was bifurcated to form Vazhayur. With this, the number of Panchayats under the Block increased to 11. In 1988, Oorngattiri and Keezhiparamba Panchayats were transferred to Areekode Block. Thus, the number of Panchayats in Kondotty Block again became 9. In 1990, Kuzhimanna and Cheekode were also transferred to Areekode Block, and Nediyiruppu Panchayat from Malappuram Block was brought under Kondotty. As a result, Kondotty Block was reduced to 8 Panchayats. In 2015, Kondotty and Nediyiruppu Grama Panchayats were merged to form Kondotty Municipality. Consequently, the urban area went out of the Block.
Also, Muthuvallur Grama Panchayat, formed by bifurcating Cheekode Grama Panchayat which was part of Areekode Block, was added to Kondotty Block Panchayat. Thus, at present, Kondotty Block Panchayat consists of 7 Grama Panchayats: Cheekode, Chelembra, Cherukavu, Pallikkal, Pulikkal, Vazhakkad, and Muthuvallur.
The Headquarters of Kondotty Block Panchayat is located in Kondotty itself. Away from the bustling atmosphere of the town, the Block Office is situated on the land donated by Pallikkathodi Erathali Rayeen.
